If you are heading to university in or around Torquay this September, or moving into a house or flat that does not have a washing machine, the local laundrette is about to become a useful part of your life. The good news is that using a laundrette is straightforward once you know what to expect. Here is everything you need for your first visit to MD Launderette.
What to Bring
- Your washing, sorted into loads: whites and light colours separate from darks and colours
- Laundry detergent: you can purchase detergent at our machines or bring your own
- Fabric conditioner if you use it: optional but available
- A bag for your clean washing
- Something to do while you wait: a 60-degree cotton cycle takes around 50 minutes
Sorting Your Laundry
The basics of sorting laundry are simple but important. Wash whites and pale colours separately from darks and brights to prevent colour transfer. Wash towels and bedding separately from clothes where possible: they take longer to dry and the agitation can damage lighter fabrics. Check care labels on anything delicate: silk, wool, and some synthetic blends require lower temperatures or a delicate cycle.
Choosing Your Wash Temperature
Most everyday clothes wash perfectly well at 30 or 40 degrees, which is better for both fabrics and the environment. White cotton items such as underwear, socks, and bed linen benefit from a 60-degree wash to maintain whiteness and hygiene. The care label on each garment gives you the maximum recommended temperature: washing below the maximum is always safe; washing above it risks shrinkage and damage.
How the Machines Work
Our machines at MD Launderette are straightforward to operate. Load your washing without overfilling (a packed machine does not wash as well as one filled to around three quarters capacity), select your temperature and programme, add detergent to the correct drawer, and follow the instructions on the machine for payment. The machine will run its cycle and signal when it is complete.
Drying Your Laundry
Our commercial dryers are significantly more powerful than domestic machines and dry a full load in 30 to 40 minutes at the appropriate setting. Check care labels for anything that should not be tumble dried: wool, silk, some synthetics, and anything labelled “dry flat” should be air dried rather than tumble dried. Jeans and heavier cotton items may need a longer or second cycle.
Do not leave the dryer before the cycle is complete: damp laundry left in a dryer will smell unpleasant and need rewashing.
Our Wash and Fold Service
If doing your own laundry feels like more than you want to manage, our wash and fold service takes the whole task off your hands. Drop off your laundry and collect it clean, dry, and folded. Contact us for pricing and availability.
MD Launderette has locations in Torquay and Paignton. Walk in during opening hours or contact us to ask about the wash and fold service.
